Willow stick, made from actual willow sticks that have been burned. It breaks easily but makes beautiful marks and is inexpensive.

Compressed Charcoal is solid reconstituted wood charcoal. It is strong and makes consistent marks, but is on the pricier side.

Chalk pencils are designed to have the same mark-making capacity as charcoal. They are fun to use but difficult to sharpen! We recommend just buying regular chalk if you’d like to offer your children white.
