Artist study is quite simply the study of the works of great artists. Charlotte Mason’s instruction for picture study involved giving the child one picture to look at for about 5-10 minutes, followed by turning the picture over and recalling all that was seen. The atmosphere of the exercise is intended to be gentle and enjoyable. It is recommended to spend a few weeks looking through the works of a single artist. Once an image or set of images has been observed and discussed they can continue to be displayed for all to see and enjoy.
A regular practice of this will result in, “a couple of hundred pictures by great masters hanging permanently in the halls of [their] imagination” (A Philosophy of Education, p. 43).
